Sea Shepherd Conservation Society exists to defend, conserve, and protect marine ecosystems by carrying out direct-action campaigns against illegal fishing, wildlife slaughter, destructive gear, and other critical threats to ocean biodiversity.
Actions:
Conducts maritime patrols using dedicated vessels to monitor and intervene in illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing.
Partners with governments, navies, and local authorities to remove illegal nets and prevent poaching — for example, in the Vaquita Refuge area in Mexico (Operation Milagro).
Exposes operations that endanger marine wildlife (e.g., krill fishing in the Southern Ocean) and documents environmental crime.
Responds to wildlife entanglements, freeing animals from illegal gear and rescuing endangered species.
Advocates for more effective marine protection through campaigns, law enforcement cooperation, and public pressure.
Maintains and expands a fleet of patrol vessels to support operations and rapid response to threats.
